Disney Buying Guide

Florida’s Walt Disney World Resort sells enough Mickey Mouse ear hats each year to cover every head in the Orlando area. But those ears are just one of thousands of Disney souvenir options to choose from.

To help you and your kids narrow down the choices, we’ve listed five free mementos and a bunch of great buys from each Walt Disney World theme park and Downtown Disney.

Magic Kingdom

Free: Ask a Cast Member (a Walt Disney World employee) at the Tomorrowland Speedway for a complimentary Mickey-themed driving licence.

Spend: Bring a piece of the park home with a Monorail Play Set (US$85) or Cinderella Castle Play Set (US$90) from the 16,742-sq.-ft. Emporium on Main Street USA.

Epcot

Free: Collect stamps—or your name written in different languages—on a cardboard cut-out of Duffy (Mickey’s teddy bear) from all 11 Kidcot Fun Stops in the World Showcase.

Spend: Shop the country pavilions for a panda string puppet from China’s House of Good Fortune (US$15) or a limited-edition, hand-painted beer stein (US$125) from Germany’s Stein Haus.

Hollywood Studios

Free: Draw a take-home character sketch in an Animation Academy class (located in the Magic of Disney Animation building) led by a Disney artist.

Spend: Grab attraction-specific souvenirs like a Star Wars Imperial Bowling Set (US$22) at the Star Tours gift shop or an Aerosmith plush top hat (US$25) from the Rock ’n’ Roller Coaster.

Animal Kingdom

Free: Pick up a notebook—like Russell’s from Pixar’s Up!—at the Wilderness Explorers Headquarters, then complete various tasks around the park to earn sticker badges.

Spend: Prep kids for the Kilimanjaro Safari with a Mickey canteen (US$13), then purchase a Zulu basket (US$90) or other African gifts at Ziwani Traders/Mombasa Marketplace.

Downtown Disney

Free: Build and keep a small, themed creation (like a dragon or helicopter) at The LEGO Store’s mini-model build on the first Tuesday of every month.

Splurge: Fill a Mr. Potato Head with Disney accessories (US$50) at Once Upon a Toy, or personalize a Disney smart phone case at the Marketplace Co-Op (US$45).
